Adam Mohammed Enters Transfer Portal: 5 Running Backs Washington Should Monitor
With Adam Mohammed entering the transfer portal, the Washington Huskies could look to add a running back this offseason. Here are five early RB targets to monitor.
On Wednesday, Washington Huskies running back Adam Mohammed announced his intent to enter the transfer portal when it opens in January. This came as a surprise to most Husky fans because Mohammed seemed to be the presumptive starter in the backfield for Washington’s offense in 2026.
Given Mohammed’s likely departure, the Huskies will likely target signing a running back in this year’s portal cycle. Whoever they land will battle with redshirt freshman Jordan Washington who played in ten games this season, behind Mohammed and Jonah Coleman. The Huskies are also welcoming four-star signee Brian Bonner, who will also likely compete for snaps in the backfield.
It will be interesting to see whether Washington targets a veteran running back with experience or aims to find a developmental piece to shore up depth in Washington running backs coach Scottie Graham’s room. It could be the case that the Huskies decide to add no one. Along with Jordan Washington and Brian Bonner, also slated to be in UW’s 2026 running back room are Quaid Carr, Julian McMahan, Ansu Sanoe, and walk-ons Beck Walker and Ryken Moon.
The list below will evolve quickly once the portal opens, but here are five early names worth tracking as Washington looks to potentially replace Mohammed through the portal.
Jerrick Gibson (Texas)
5-10, 206 lbs; Sophomore (2 years of eligibility left)
Gibson left Texas in mid-October and announced his intent to enter the transfer portal. He was a four-star recruit out of IMG Academy, and is ranked as one of the top 5 running backs available in the portal. A December scouting report from 247 sports describes him as “a compact, well-built back with good burst and short-area quickness to thrive between the tackles.” In four games with the Longhorns this season, Gibson totaled 152 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Fame Ijeboi (Minnesota)
6-0, 210 lbs; Freshman (3 years of eligibility left)
In 11 games for the Golden Gophers, Ijeboi rushed for 441 yards on 91 attempts, good for 4.5 yards per carry. Ijeboi would bring immediate Big Ten experience to the Huskies’ running back room with a chance to compete for a starting role or a complementary role with Jordan Washington. Ijeboi, like the departing Adam Mohammed, served as Minnesota’s No. 2 running back this past season.
Cam Edwards (UConn)
5-11, 210 lbs; Junior (1 year of eligibility left)
Edwards will likely garner Power 4 interest this portal cycle. He rushed for 1,132 yards and totaled 14 touchdowns. He eclipsed the 100-yard mark in five different games this season, including a monster 194-yard game on 24 carries, where he found the end zone twice in a win against Ball State. Edwards seems like a long shot for the Huskies because he will command a high cost, and Washington has other, more pressing positional needs to address besides running back.
Jalen Dupree (Colorado State)
6-0, 210 lbs; Freshman (3 years of eligibility left)
Washington fans may be familiar with Dupree, as he rushed for 92 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown in Colorado State’s season-opening loss to Washington this season. Dupree ended the season rushing for 508 yards on 102 carries, good for a 5.0 yards per carry average. Dupree is an upside player who is worth monitoring.
Carter Vargas (UC Davis)
6-0, 210 lbs, Sophomore (2 years of eligibility left)
This is a sleeper option for the Huskies. Vargas has upside, showing flashes of production for a UC Davis team that went 9-4 this season. Vargas, like Dupree, also played against the Huskies in the non-conference schedule. Against Washington, he had 5 carries for 43 yards. Vargas’ best games came against Southern Utah (168 total yards, 2 touchdowns) and Northern Colorado (90 rushing yards on 16 attempts).
